Meet Femme Luxe's Photographer/Videographer

We met with the babe behind the pics, Kelly McEvoy, to find out what it’s like to be a Femme Luxe fashion photographer. From her ultimate tips and tricks that contribute towards the perfect pic, to a day in the life, we’ve got all the insider info. Take a peek at our exclusive interview!

1. So being a photographer/videographer, what exactly does your job involve?

Well, obviously I’m responsible for taking all the pictures. There can be up to two shoots a week, which means there’s a lot of images to go through! I retouch all the pictures, and occasionally shoot a video for the most recent campaign. This often involves editing clips, making adverts and creating promotional material that’s usually featured on our social media channels!

2. What do you do when you get to work?

It really depends what day it is! It’s always so busy, especially when there’s two shoots a week. If I’m working in the office, I get there for around 8:30am, and tend to just get stuck into retouching the photos. When I’ve finished, I send them to our product uploader for the pics to get resized and uploaded onto the site. Obviously, a shoot day is a little different!

3. What does a typical week look like for you?

So there’s usually two shoots a week, which means there’s lots of editing and retouching! I’m always on hand to create various graphics for the website, Instagram and sometimes LinkedIn as well. It really is non stop!

4. How do you organise a shoot day?

I’m fortunate enough to work really closely with the creative team who basically plan the whole shoot, so I can’t take too much credit for that! Once we have the brief, it’s my responsibility to bring the vision alive. I coordinate with the models, gather all the equipment, any props we might need for the shoot and set up the lighting.

5. What are your tips and tricks for snapping killer shots?

Lighting is key - seriously. Having consistent lighting can really make or break a shoot. Getting the lighting right makes retouching more simple and less time consuming - which is super helpful. Lighting that’s on point creates polished photos that will look great on site.

6. How do you edit your pics?

I guess I just stick to the basics! I edit all my pictures in photoshop and try to keep it as subtle as possible. I retouch any blemishes and adjust lighting to make sure they all look identical. It’s really important not to overedit, but to make the right things stand out!

7. What's your favourite thing about the job?

I’d have to say that the thing I love most about the job is getting to be creative on the shoots! It’s so much fun to play around with different poses and props to put together a really good campaign. When launching a campaign, there’s a lot of pressure, but it’s worth every moment when you see the end result for the first time.

8. And finally, what advice would you give to recent photography students trying to get into this industry?

I can’t stress enough how important it is to get a good portfolio together! It’s a great opportunity to prove what you can do, and is something you can look back on to see how your skills have grown!
