Here we are with another fashion history story telling. Today I’m going to share with you the history of brave women who made the fabulous trend of women’s trousers. as you know, trousers were totally masculine clothes and women used to wear skirts. But what happened? What made them do the revolution and start wearing trousers? Come along with me on this article and learn how and who did make the great change of history.

The first one!

I’m sure that the first woman who wore the pants was an angry and decadent woman who was tired of men wearing their trousers easily, while she had to put on those long maxi double and triple layered skirts! Well, doesn’t matter who she was but thanks to her, we can now wear trousers easily and have stylish looks on top of feeling comfy. But well, in modern life smart trousers women’s, aren’t based on the very past times. But before starting our main subject, let’s say thanks to all those women who gave effort on bringing the lifesaving trend, trousers, to our lives and wardrobes. Thank you ladies!

The brave woman

Elizabeth Smith Miller made a revolution in fashion world by starting to wear some paper bag trousers in public places on 1851. And you know what? This was just at the age of tight corsets and stays! But unfortunately she didn’t get enough support for her new invent and was criticized by everyone around her mercilessly and in cold-blood. You see, there were always brave women and girls fighting against the masculinist society all the times in history and there also will be many in the future.

1-womens trousers

Feminism spring

American feminist Amelia bloomer, encouraged many women to wear pants under their skirts after shooting a photo with her pants on at a photography studio. The river which was originated from the spring, Amelia, ran slowly throughout the time and for a long time by other women, feminist or no-feminist.

2-the pants

Lady Hamlet

Suddenly, there came a lady which wore the pants, for the first time, solely and without wearing a skirt over them! And of course she was no one but Sarah Bernhardt, the Parisian stage actress. The fact is that she was wearing those high waisted cigarette trousers while shooting some photos of her and she made it to the stage only once and in a play, in the role of Hamlet. On that times, it didn’t get much trendy but it was a great inspiration for women of next years and centuries in their fashion choices.

Who run the world? GIRLS

And here comes my favorite, dear Eleonora. For those of you who don’t know her, let me write you this short sentence from her biographer, Peggy Miller Franck:

"Sports were never seen as a proving ground for women, but Eleo made it a proving ground”

Eleonora Sears pioneered women's sports when she took up long-distance walking from Boston to Newport, her chauffeur followed at a discreet distance with a thermos and sandwiches. She was a model of social decorum in the mansions of the rich, but on the athletic field she shattered the rules during the first half of the 20th century. She rode horses in pants, crashed men-only squash courts and shocked tennis spectators by playing in rolled-up sleeves. When she showed up at Burligame Country Club in her tie waist trousers, wanting to represent America in the games in front of English people, that wasn’t accepted from the men. But later, she showed the world the power of a woman with her successful life and athletic career.

4-The Blonde Venus

The Blonde Venus

The German-American fashion icon of 1930’s was undoubtedly Marlene Dietrichle with her masculine fashion style. She made this belief among people which was “the possibility of women wearing pants” and made the path much smoother to go for the women after her. If she were my grandmamma, I wouldn’t ever let anyone forget her name with writing her quote on my room’s wall that says “I dress for the image. Not for myself, not for the public, not for fashion, not for men”

5-trousers

Coco Chanel

One of the greatest names in fashion world of all times, Gabrielle Chanel (which we know her as Coco), was for sure one the most important persons in making trousers inter into the lives of women. Due to the rumours, a horseback riding fan, Coco, got tired of her woolen skirt and turned it into a pair of trousers by cutting it off and sewing! (wow, it seems that she was a great designer from the very first moments of her life). Now just think about the effects of a woman saying: “I don’t make fashion, I am the fashion” wearing trousers, on other people! You probably remember her high waisted wide leg trousers, right? And you know that those are still trendy from that time until these days! What a great influencer!

6-black trousers women

The Sabrina

Audrey Hepburn made thousands of women buy their first trousers with showing them that how much the pants will fit them and make them look gorgeous, instead of fighting against men. Well, it’s obvious that she had a great sense of politics beside her fantastic fashion taste and acting talent. And who could be a better fashion icon than her with all that natural glam? So her black trousers women got extremely famous and made the way to the trendy high waisted skinny trousers. Did you know that she told this famous quote: “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!”? well, it shows her smartness enough by itself!

Parisian ladies

The first, infamous women wearing trousers and pants in 1922- Paris.

7-The Sabrina

The masculine feline!

Well, just look at her pictures and the clothes she wears… if Katharine Hepburn was still living in these days, she would still be a fashion icon! I’m speechless guys.

1919

The women who not only wore trousers, but also worked in the shipyard in world war first. God bless them all.

1930 -1940

Congrats. There came the first jeans for women! Hooray.
